On the morning of Sept. 13, an appointment ceremony chaired by Prof. XU Wen was held at the Institute of Solid State Physics (ISSP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Dr. and Prof. Francois M. Peeters, a world-famous scientist on condensed matter physics and the head of the research group “Condensed Matter Theory” at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, was awarded the Visiting Professor for Senior International Scientist of CAS by Prof. CAI Weiping, director of the ISSP. After the ceremony, Prof. Peeters presented a seminar entitled “Functionalization of Graphene with H and F”. Francois Peeters obtained his Ph.D. in 1982 at the University of Antwerp. Subsequently, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Bell Laboratories and Bellcore (New Jersey, USA). His research interests include the theory of semiconductor and superconductor nanostructures, Wigner crystallization of bilayers and wires, and quantum confinement in nanosize superconductors. Since 1980,Prof. Peeters has published 3 books by Elsevier and Plenum Press, 20 review articles and over 900 papers in international authoritative journals, including 2 in Nature and over 40 in Phys. Rev. Lett. He has given more than 200 invited talks at international conferences, summer schools and work-shops around the world. He is a member of the Editorial board of Physica B, Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Microelectronics Journal, Solid State Communications, etc. He is also a fellow of the American Physical Society and was recently elected by the editors of the APS journals as an “outstanding referee.
